TCX Thin Client
Tangent Announces Quad Xeon QX 5000 Server

Fault-Tolerant, Enterprise Server for Windows 2000 Features
Intel's SPSH4 Platform

Burlingame, CA (October 30, 2002) Tangent Computer today announced the Pillar QX 5000, a 4-way Intel® Xeon™ MP network server with support for up to four 1.6GHz CPUs and designed for demanding Windows 2000 and soon-to-be-released .NET environments.

Tangent's QX 5000 packs several advanced network server features, including enhanced manageability as well as the scalability and throughput required for corporate and institutional data centers. The QX 5000 takes advantage of the power of 4-way Intel® Xeon™ MP Processors and is specifically designed to eliminate bottlenecks in data flow and run performance-intensive applications such as Microsoft Exchange 2000 Groupware, SQL Server applications, large Active Directories, storage management, data warehousing and mining, business processing, digital content creation, large-scale terminal services, and video streaming.

The QX 5000 is based on Intel's new server-class SPSH4 and SRSH4 platforms, featuring the ServerWorks ServerSet IV GCHE chipset, and tailored by Tangent to suit the needs of individual installations. The Xeon MP CPUs have several key advantages over other Intel Xeon and Pentium 4 processors, such as the ability to interoperate in a 4-CPU environment, the addition of a 1MB L3 cache, Intel's Hyper-Threading™ technology, plus support for Server Management.

The Xeon MP is more flexible than the current Pentium 4 CPU because it expands processing capability from two to four CPUs. The platform can handle up to 24GB of DDR-200 memory. Two Ultra 160 SCSI channels are standard as well as a 10/100/1000 Intel 82554 network interface port and a second 10/100 Intel 82550 network interface port. The backplane includes four 64-bit 100MHz PCI-X hot-plug slots, two 64-bit 100MHz PCI-X non hot-plug slots, and two 32-bit 33MHz PCI non hot-plug slots. Tangent offers a broad range of server-based, fully Windows NTFS-compatible storage and backup solutions.

"The Tangent QX 5000 offers our customers a reliable and cost-effective solution for uninterrupted access to their data and applications," said Tangent COO Mike Zabaneh. "Business enterprises and our core group of government and education customers will be attracted to this system when they compare the features, performance, life-time technical support, and total cost of ownership. We employed the best technology that Intel offers and designed this solution to compete head-to-head with mid-range servers from HP, Compaq, Dell, and Sun at a 25-50% cost advantage."

The Tangent QX 5000 is available now at prices starting at $9,995. The server can be configured in a tower enclosure or rackmount chassis. The base configuration includes: the Intel SPSH4 platform, single 1.4GHz Xeon MP processor (expandable to four CPUs, and upgradeable to higher-speeds), 1GB ECC registered DDR-200 memory expandable to 24GB, 18GB Ultra 160 SCSI drive, two integrated Ultra 160 SCSI disk sub-system controllers, 32X CD-ROM; 3.5 inch 1.44MB floppy drive, 17 inch monitor with 1280 x 1024 resolution, and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server installed. The QX 5000 is backed by a limited 3-year parts & labor warranty.

Performance/Redundant Features
The QX 5000 is fully redundant with a hot-swap disk-array, and hot-swap power supplies and cooling fan options. The server also provides automatic switch-over in the event of a system fault. Switch-over occurs seamlessly, immediately, and transparently to all server users. This protects against the consequences of CPU failures and ensures data integrity by eliminating threats from any single point of failure. Advanced Intel® Server Management software provides data protection, integrated remote management, event alerting, plus proactive fault management.

Tangent's Server Support Program
Tangent offers a no-charge Server Support program with the QX 5000. It includes a comprehensive site and needs analysis, solution consulting, and custom software installation to help reduce the TCO.
